Internet problems alert
Published: January 2008

UAE communications provider du is alerting customers to a degradation in its internet and international voice calls during peak times. This is due to cuts in two international submarine cable systems in the Mediterranean Sea, which is affecting a number of telecome operators globally.

du says it’s working actively with the submarine cable system operators (FLAG Telecom and SEA-ME-WE 4) to ascertain the reasons for the cables being cut. These firms in turn are working to give affected operators a recovery schedule.

In the meantime, du has already started transferring internet and international voice traffic through other cable systems that have not been affected, although some congestion may be expected at peak times until this issue is resolved.
