The three-day Dubai International Jazz Festival is on at Dubai Media City this month form March 8-10.
Some of the choices of artists are perhaps a little contentious, if we’re being strict in our definition of jazz.
Toto, known for such hits as “Africa”, “Rosanna” and “Hold the Line”, are a fine bunch of musicians but no-one to my knowledge has ever described their music as jazz.
It’s a label which has been stuck on prodigy Jamie Cullum (pictured), though again not always totally justifiably. But the young pianist with the heart-breaking looks is undeniably a big coup for the festival.
Supergroup Acoustic Alchemy may be the biggest surprise package for those not immersed in the jazz scene. Their accessible yet intricate music appeals on several different levels.
A familiar name to British jazz fans is saxophonist Jon Hassell, who recently came to live in the UAE.
Also good to see Randy Brecker back on the road, following the recent, tragically-early death of his brother Michael. He is joined on stage by his wife Ada Rovatti, a rising star in the saxophone firmament.
Other acts appearing include Nat King Cole’s brother Freddy, a legendary pianist/singer in his own right, and singer Dee Dee Bridgwater.
