The stones of the zodiac sign of Scorpio are topaz, red tourmaline, haematite, citrine, garnet, agate and amethyst. For this article I have singled out Haematite. Please refer to previous articles if you would like to have insights into the healing properties of the other stones.
Shiny silver-grey haematite is known as the “stone for the mind” as it enhances mental capability and brings mental clarity, organisation and concentration to the mind. It aids memory and has a calming effect. It’s a great stone to have in your pocket when attending an important meeting.
In ancient Egypt a haematite stone was placed under the heads of mummies to ensure a restful time during their passage to eternity.
Haematite is also called bloodstone, and the word haematite is actually derived from the Greek word haima – meaning blood. It is no surprise that the stone is used for the treatment of blood-related illnesses such as anaemia.
Haematite purifies the blood and can be used for cardio-vascular weaknesses and for imbalances of the kidneys and liver. PMS and menstrual cramps are reduced and haematite has also been used to balance the nervous system, for spinal alignments and to mend broken bones. It also aids tissue regeneration.
Haematite boosts confidence, courage and willpower, helps to overcome anxiety and promotes sound sleep.
The stone can also be used for protection and is said to protect one from the evil eye. It decreases emotional negativity and can help to balance the body, mind and spirit. Warriors in Roman times used haematite as protection during battle.
Haematite is associated with the root (base) chakra. It’s known to have a fantastic grounding ability and can be used in treating jet lag, so take a tumble stone with you when you are travelling.
Haematite is mainly mined in South America and Brazil. Deposits of haematite also exist in Europe – in Sweden, Germany, Norway, England, and Spain, as well as in New Zealand and in the US.
