Easter is April’s eggstravaganza, so it’s time to focus on eggs. Last month, the extent of a giant egg swindle was revealed. Leading supermarkets in Britain reeled under the shock that they’d been shelling out far too much for fake organic and free-range eggs.

Tesco and Morrisons are two of the main victims, and the latest figures show that at least 500 million wrongly labelled eggs have been sold to shoppers.

Enforcement officers anxious to crack the case, want to speak to a man caught by surveillance cameras trying to gain access to a safety deposit box in Kensington, West London. Investigators at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs believe that he could hold the key to the nest of criminals behind the fraud.
They think it’s likely that a “broker”, based in mainland Europe, is responsible for the illicit egg supply to Britain.

The eggs in question have been brought in without any identification stamps, and could have had a high risk of containing salmonella.
