Bouncing back

Get your skates on pictureFirst made popular in the 1950s, and again in the 1970s, roller skating (and its modern cousin inline skating) is now back with a vengeance. Endorsed by pop stars like Madonna, who embraced it in her recent video, life on wheels is now considered ultra cool.

In UK, the LFNS (London Friday Night Skate) is a 10-15 mile (15-24km) course that takes place every week, starting in Hyde Park.

Andreas Kolattek, the LFNS founder says, “I think it has benefited from the ice skating boom triggered by last year’s Strictly Ice Dancing TV show”.

But whether you’re skating on the tarmac, or on the ice (perhaps a more comfortable alternative at this time of year) the fitness benefits are the same.

Vigorous skating can burn 350 calories in 30 minutes, which is somewhere between cycling and running.

“It’s a great cardiovascular workout and is good for toning your thighs and bum, as well as shoulders if you swing your arms” say Kolattek. It’s also good fun!

Dust off the Trampette pictureMost people have childhood memories of the fun of bouncing on a trampette, or rebounder as it’s often called. But it’s now proving to be a very useful and robust fitness tool in the modern world.

Every time you land on a rebounder, your body is subjected to twice the force of gravity, but without the strain of landing on solid ground. This strengthens the musculoskeletal system and helps prevent osteoporosis.

Made famous more recently by footballers such as David Beckham, rebounding is now recognised as a great fitness method.

According to NASA it’s “the most efficient and effective exercise yet devised by man”. It’s 68 per cent more effective than jogging and kinder to the joints. Just do two 30-minute sessions a week and you’ll notice the difference.

So get the trampette out, and put that bounce back into your step.
