The range of beauty treatments now available locally can be bewildering, so the only real way to find out which is for you is to try them out in person.

With that in mind, we sent our roving reporter Jane to the Al Shunnar medispa in Dubai for a facial appointment with Janis Jones.

Janis is a medically-licensed aesthetician and has worked in the skin care industry for over 20 years.

The treatment she had lined up for Jane was a Deep Cleanse Facial. It’s normally the first treatment an Al Shunnar client receives, before going on to other treatments which may be required, depending on the client’s skin condition and concerns.

The Deep Cleanse Facial always starts with a thorough analysis of the skin to determine which of four skin types the client has - normal, dry, oily or combination.

Janis used Erno Lazlo skin care products for treating Jane’s skin. This is a product line which has been time-tested, having been created 75 years ago, and is a range used by a host of contemporary celebrities, including Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Johnny Depp, Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry.

Over the years the Lazlo range has also been a favourite of many legendary figures, such as Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis.

Once Jane had been made comfortable, Janis performed a double cleanse on her face, followed by the application of a biological peel to remove dead cells and to soften the skin, making it more receptive to the products being used for the treatment.

A gentle, aromatic steam is then used to encourage the skin to release impurities. After about 10-15 minutes of this treatment, Janis very gently extracted deeply-embedded impactions to prevent further break-outs.

A hi-tech, high frequency gadget is then employed which is anti-bacterial and helps re-balance the skin.

Next it was time for a deeply-relaxing massage! For Jane, Janis chose a highly-nutritive massage base, an anti-oxidant cream from Erno Lazlo that really suited her skin condition.

Finally a rose extract algae mask was applied to hydrate and refresh Jane’s skin.

And her verdict in a word? “Fantastic.” Sounds like Jane made the right choice!
