Red hot and cool

Traditional Chinese buildings and furniture have long been designed with particular emphasis on colour and what each colour symbolises. There are certain rules and principles with regard to colour schemes that are applied to building and its components.

Symbolism

Red has been considered the most auspicious colour for generations. It is associated with warmth and the Fire Element and represents good fortune and happiness. However, good fortune will not apply to everyone.

For Example, hot tempered individuals should use red less often as it is rather like adding fuel to the fire. Decorating with red objects is most auspicious for those that are born in an Earth year because the colour red symbolises Fire in the Five Elements cycle, which in turn creates Earth. Favourable direction

Red is most harmonious with the South. The Fire energy of the South can be enhanced with yang shades of red and pink especially to increase the area’s chi energy.

For instance, you can enhance the energy in your living room by placing a large red sofa in the southern area or even adding red cushions or other accessories which represent the Fire element.

Strong dark reds work well in a South facing room. Adding candles, red roses or napkins and table linen will add a touch of passion and stimulate a dynamic atmosphere.
