Many people today are turning to Feng Shui to help them get an edge in their working environment. They may want to achieve a higher turnover, maintain harmonious working relationships or perhaps improve employee productivity.
There are a variety of different methods and theories used to rearrange office layouts to improve the prosperity and general luck of the business. Of these, the compass school theory is very popular and fun to work with.
Here are some layout rules that anyone can follow to improve the harmony in their office environment: -
First, your desk should be placed in what we call the ‘power’ position. This is located in a diagonal line from the doorway or entrance into the room.
Next try and draw some attention to this area by creating a focal point with perhaps a picture of a mountain behind you, a nice lamp or a plant.
You should never have your back to the door as this may cause problems with colleagues and office politics. You should also avoid sitting with a window behind you. This symbolically means you will have no support in your career, so make sure you sit with your back against a solid wall. If there are windows in your office, ensure that they are on the left hand side of your desk or in front of you.
Check that the area in front of your desk is open and clear and, most importantly, that you have more room in front of you then behind you. This is often referred to as the “bright hall area” and this will assist your career in flowing smoothly without too many obstacles in your pathway to success.
Do not sit facing a toilet or a staircase, as this will hinder your chances of climbing the career ladder. Try to angle your desk away from sharp protruding corners or bookshelves. If this is not possible, then place a plant to block the harmful chi.
It is more auspicious to have a regular rectangular shaped desk, then an “L or U” shaped desk. However, a semi-circular desk that is not too wide and curves softly around its occupant is considered auspicious.
A desk that is 33 inches in height, 35 inches in width and 60 inches in length is considered to be the most auspicious “power desk”. Your power chair should be high in back support, solid in framework and with a height of 43 inches.
Once you are behind your desk, you can place fresh flowers or a plant on the left hand corner. Ensure your plants are healthy and that they do not obstruct your view.
Also keep in mind that the left hand side of your desk should be higher than your right side. Do not use bonsai plants, as this will ensure your career is short-lived and a cactus will cause your career to be full of problems.
Once you have made these changes, your next step is ideally to ensure that you are located facing one of your auspicious personal directions. Contact us if you want to know more about how to do this.
The final step is to utilise the 8 Mansions Theory to Feng Shui your desk. First, you need to locate the compass directions on your desk, then follow these very simple rules:-
Flowers belong in the East, plants should be placed in the Southeast to boost your income. Crystals and earthenware like to be in the Southwest, whereas a lamp belongs in the South. Ideally computers and office equipment should be located on a separate desk in the Northwest.
Just remember that Feng Shui is very complex and can sometimes be quite confusing, however by following the above simple rules you will ensure that you are avoiding some of the major taboos of Office Feng Shui.
