Moxibustion is used in conjunction with acupuncture to accentuate the effects of the overall treatment. It’s particularly useful for lower back pain, but also works well for other conditions, and experienced acupucturists will know when and where to use it.

Moxibustion is literally the burning of moxas - which are preparations of dried leaves from the common mugwort or the wormwood tree - at acupoints, to stimulate chi.

Moxa comes in the form of cones, which are placed on the body to smoulder until they become uncomfortable, or moxa sticks, which are lit like a cigar, then held over the acupoint.

Practitioners can either bring the moxas into contact with the acupuncture needles, or place them directly on the skin in the form of the small cones. Sometime the cones are placed on a layer of ginger first.
