Hydrotherapy is the use of water in any of its forms (ice, liquid, or steam), internally or externally.
It’s a form of treatment and relaxation that is thousands of years old. Roman and Turkish baths were once used to treat all kinds of illnesses, for cleansing and for general well-being.
Modern saunas and whirlpools are used as an aid in treating muscular and joint injuries, and conditions such as arthritis, as well as treating the overall well-being of the individual.
The benefits of hydrotherapy are a result of three principles - buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure and water temperature.
Buoyancy is beneficial when treating muscular or joint injuries, as being in water reduces body weight by up to 90%. This relieves the pressure of weight on joints and muscles, and, the feeling of weightlessness is very relaxing mentally as well as physically. It’s also recommended for arthritis sufferers, as it eases joint stiffness and improves the mobility of the joints.
Hydrostatic pressure, in the form of water currents, offers a form of massage that is soothing as well as healing. Tight muscles are relaxed, high pressure jets help breaks up unwanted deposits such as cellulite, and natural pain killers, called endorphins, are released into the bloodstream.
Thermal techniques range from hammams, steam inhalation and sitz baths, to plunge pools, ice packs and hot compresses. The extremes of hot and cold water stimulate the circulation and aid detoxification.
